Why is weight loss so challenging?
Losing weight isn’t just about eating less and moving more. If it were that simple, far fewer people would struggle with their weight.
Science shows that your body actually fights to keep the weight on:
Your metabolism slows down when you lose weight, making it harder to burn calories.
Your hunger hormones increase, making you feel hungrier even when you've eaten enough.
Your body tries to regain lost weight because it sees fat loss as a "threat" to survival.
Your genetics can play a bigger part than you may have been led to believe.
Genetics can account for up to 70% of body weight differences between people.
Some individuals are naturally more prone to storing fat, feeling hungrier, or burning fewer calories.
This means:
You’re not failing - your body is hardwired to resist weight loss.
Standard diets often don’t work long-term because they don’t change how your body regulates weight.
Medical treatments like weight loss surgery help reset your body’s weight regulation system so you can lose weight and keep it off.
Weight loss surgery isn’t a quick fix, but it is a powerful tool that can help you take control of your health:
✔ Lose on avg 25-40% of your weight within the first two years.
✔ Improve or even reverse conditions like type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and sleep apnea.
✔ Boost energy, mobility, and confidence so you can fully enjoy life.
How does surgery work?
Smaller stomach = smaller portions – Surgery reduces stomach size, so you feel full with much smaller portions.
Lower hunger hormones – Surgery helps reset appetite hormones, making cravings and hunger easier to control.
Fewer calories absorbed – Some surgeries reroute part of the digestion process, so your body takes in fewer calories.
Complex changes to your metabolism, gut bacteria, hormones and digestion post-surgery also contribute to your ability to lose weight.
Surgery helps reset your body's weight regulation, giving you more significant weight loss that’s sustainable the long-term.
Who is eligible?
Those with a:
Body mass index (BMI) ≥35
or ≥30 if you experience a weight-related illness e.g. type 2 diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnoea etc.
There are different types of weight loss surgery.
The best option for you depends on your health, weight loss goals, and medical history.
In your initial consultation, our surgeons can help guide you through your options and recommend the best choice for your situation.
Weight Loss Surgery Types
-
A portion of the outer part of the stomach is surgically removed, leaving behind a banana-shaped pouch.
-
The top part of the stomach is reformed into a small pouch and joined to the middle part of the intestine, ‘bypassing’ the first part of the intestine.
-
Converting an existing weight loss surgery to a new one. Most often converting a gastric band to a gastric bypass.
